September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

When young people have cancer, they and their families can use lots of support. Children need more than checkups and medicine. They and their caretakers also need helping hands to create friendships, relieve pain and boost healing.

There are many ways to support families with a childhood cancer diagnosis. Here are three options to start:

• Help someone's dream come true. Many wish fulfillment organizations help create lasting memories for families. Find a list of organizations on Cancer.Net.
• The Kids' Cancer Pages is a free directory that lists valuable resources for families, such as financial aid assistance. Download your own here.
• Volunteer as a Chemo Pal to play games, share hobbies, and offer comfort to children in treatment. Get started at Children's Cancer Association.

Many cancers in children are found early, either by a doctor or by family. Have your child checked if you notice unusual signs, including:

• An unexplained lump
• Easy bruising
• Limping
• Sudden vision changes
