December is Flu Vaccination Month
Tis the season for the flu.
Although it’s common, the flu is a serious and highly contagious respiratory illness. Everyone is at risk for getting it and spreading it, and getting a flu shot is the most effective way to avoid it.
We’ve teamed up with CJ McCollum and his mom, Kathy, to share ways you can help prevent the flu.
This year, it’s more important than ever to get a flu shot. Along with protecting yourself against the flu, getting vaccinated can have other benefits for high-risk individuals, your community and your local healthcare systems in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Because the flu and COVID-19 are both respiratory illnesses with many common symptoms, people who have not been received their flu shots could confuse their flu symptoms for COVID.
As COVID-19 cases begin to rise and hospitals being to reach maximum capacity for patients, arming yourself with the flu vaccine will help ease the current burden by:
- Lowering the number of flu-related emergency room visits and overnight stays
- Lowering the number of flu-related ICU patients
- Helping to protect vulnerable populations
By now, the phrase “We are all in this together” may be an overused cliché, but there is no doubt that building healthier communities is a team effort. Be sure to get your flu shot to protect yourself, your family and your community.
